- Which vacuum for resin casting?
For resin casting, especially with epoxy or polyurethane resins, the choice of vacuum equipment depends on your goal: removing bubbles before pouring (degassing) or eliminating them in the final casting.
Vacuum Chamber + Pump (for Degassing)
It's less essential for most casting resins, as pouring can reintroduce bubbles, and many resins aren't viscous enough to need it. However, it helps with clear casts if you degas the mixed resin first.
Key specs to look for:
A.Pump → single- or two-stage rotary vane, 3-5 CFM (cubic feet per minute) for hobby use (faster pull-down), capable of 29 inHg (inches of mercury) or better (50 microns ultimate vacuum).
B.Chamber → 3-5 gallon stainless steel with acrylic or tempered glass lid for visibility.
Pressure Pot (Best for Bubble-Free Castings)
It compresses any remaining bubbles to microscopic size (invisible) while the resin cures under 50-80 PSI, and forces resin into fine mold details. It's especially crucial for clear or detailed casts. Many hobbyists skip vacuum entirely and just use pressure for resin.
Ideal Setup
Professionals often use both: Vacuum degas silicone/resin first, then pour into mold and cure in pressure pot.If choosing one, go with a pressure pot for most resin casting needs—it's more reliable for bubble-free results.
