- Is die casting molds reusable?
Yes, die casting molds (also called dies) are reusable. They are made from durable, heat-resistant tool steels (like H13) designed to withstand high pressures and temperatures in the die casting process, where molten metal is forced into the mold under pressure.
Unlike expendable molds (e.g., in sand casting), die casting uses permanent metal dies that can produce thousands to over a million parts before needing repair or replacement. Typical lifespan varies by material and conditions:
a.Zinc die casting → Up to 1 million cycles.
b.Aluminum die casting → Often 100,000–200,000 cycles.
c.With proper maintenance → Longer durability.
This reusability makes die casting cost-effective for high-volume production, though initial tooling costs are high.
Here are some examples of die casting molds and tools:

Note: Die casting differs from gravity-fed permanent mold casting, but both use reusable metal molds—the key distinction is the high-pressure injection in die casting.
