  • How much to injection mold an artisan keycap?

Injection molding an artisan keycap is a significant shift from the hobbyist standard of resin casting. While resin casting is labor-intensive, injection molding is capital-intensive upfront but extremely cheap per unit once the mold is built.

For a high-precision project like this, here is the breakdown of what you should expect to pay in 2026.

1. Tooling Costs (The Big Investment)

The mold (tooling) is your primary expense. Because keycaps are small but require high detailand perfect stem fit (tolerances of 10.01mm), the cost depends on the mold material andcomplexity.

Complexity Multiplier: If your artisan design has "undercuts" (features that prevent thepart from sliding out of the mold), you will need side-actions or lifters, which can add$1,000 - $2,000 per mechanism to the mold cost.

2. Per-Part Production Costs

Once the mold is paid for, the cost to "shoot" each keycap is remarkably low.

Material: Engineering plastics like PBT or ABS are roughly $3 - $5 per kg. Since a keycapweighs only a few grams, the material cost is negligible (often under $0.05).

Machine Time & Labor: Most factories charge a "setup fee" per run (approx. $300 -$800) and then a per-unit price of $0.20 - $1.50 depending on the volume.

3. Total Project Example (500 Units)

If you were to produce a limited run of 500 high-detail PBT artisan keycaps through a precisionsupplier in Shenzhen:

Mold Design & DFM: $500

Aluminum Tooling: $2,500

Production (500 units @ $1.00/pc): $500

Shipping & Tariffs: $300

Total: -$3,800 (Effective cost: $7.60 per keycap)

Key Technical Considerations

The Stem Challenge: The most difficult part of keycap molding is the MX stem. Ifthe mold is off by even 0.02mm, the keycap will either crack the switch stem or falloff. Ensure your vendor (like AluPrototype or similar precision shops) hasexperience with high-tolerance electronics housings.

Multi-Shot Molding: If your artisan design requires two different colors of plastic(double-shot), you effectively double the tooling cost because you need twoseparate molds and a specialized "two-shot" injection machine.
