How to fix stringing 3d printing?

Fixing Stringing in 3D Printing

Stringing happens when the nozzle oozes filament while moving between parts. Here are the main fixes:

1. Enable/Increase Retraction

The most effective fix. Retraction pulls filament back into the nozzle during travel moves.

  • Retraction distance: 1–6mm (direct drive: 1–3mm, Bowden: 4–6mm)

  • Retraction speed: 25–45 mm/s

2. Lower Print Temperature

High temps = runnier filament = more ooze.

  • Drop temp by 5–10°C increments and test

  • PLA: 190–210°C | PETG: 230–245°C | ABS: 230–250°C

3. Increase Travel Speed

Faster travel = less time for filament to ooze.

  • Aim for 150–200 mm/s travel speed

4. Enable "Avoid Crossing Perimeters" / Combing

Tells the nozzle to travel over already-printed areas instead of open air — dramatically reduces visible strings.

5. Reduce Bowden Tube Gap (if applicable)

A gap between the tube and nozzle is a common stringing culprit — check for wear or poor seating.

6. Check for Moisture in Filament

Wet filament oozes and pops. Dry it at:

  • PLA: 45–50°C for 4–6 hrs

  • PETG: 65°C for 4–6 hrs

  • Use a food dehydrator or dedicated filament dryer

7. Lower Flow Rate Slightly

Try reducing flow/extrusion multiplier by 2–5% to reduce excess material.
