What is Prototype Plastic Injection Purpose?
What Is It?
Prototype injection molding is the process of creating small quantities of injection-molded plastic parts before committing to full production tooling. It bridges the gap between 3D printing/prototyping and mass manufacturing.
Primary Purposes
1. Design Validation
Verify that the part geometry works as intended
Check wall thickness, draft angles, and parting lines
Identify design flaws before expensive production tooling is cut
2. Functional Testing
Test the part under real-world conditions (stress, heat, load)
Evaluate snap fits, threads, and mechanical assemblies
Confirm tolerances and fit with mating components
3. Material Evaluation
Test the actual production material (ABS, PP, Nylon, PC, etc.)
3D printed parts behave differently — prototype molding gives true material properties
Compare material options before finalizing specs
4. Process Development

Identify issues like sink marks, warping, flash, or short shots early
Refine gate location and runner design
