What is Prototype Plastic Injection Purpose?

What Is It?

Prototype injection molding is the process of creating small quantities of injection-molded plastic parts before committing to full production tooling. It bridges the gap between 3D printing/prototyping and mass manufacturing.

 

Primary Purposes

1. Design Validation
  • Verify that the part geometry works as intended

  • Check wall thickness, draft angles, and parting lines

  • Identify design flaws before expensive production tooling is cut

2. Functional Testing
  • Test the part under real-world conditions (stress, heat, load)

  • Evaluate snap fits, threads, and mechanical assemblies

  • Confirm tolerances and fit with mating components

3. Material Evaluation
  • Test the actual production material (ABS, PP, Nylon, PC, etc.)

  • 3D printed parts behave differently — prototype molding gives true material properties

  • Compare material options before finalizing specs

4. Process Development
  • Optimize injection parameters (pressure, temperature, cycle time)

  • Identify issues like sink marks, warping, flash, or short shots early

  • Refine gate location and runner design

5. Market & Stakeholder Testing
