- Can za12 be die cast
Yes, ZA-12 can be die cast, but it requires cold chamber die casting due to its higher aluminum content (11-13%) compared to standard zinc alloys like Zamak. Unlike Zamak alloys, which are typically processed via hot chamber die casting, ZA-12’s higher melting point and composition necessitate the cold chamber process, where molten metal is ladled into the die to prevent equipment wear and iron contamination.
1.Key Points for Die Casting ZA-12:
a.Process: Cold chamber die casting is used, similar to aluminum die casting. This requires specialized equipment to handle ZA-12’s melting point (around 377-432°C or 710-810°F) and avoid damage to hot chamber systems.
b.Properties: ZA-12 offers high strength (yield strength ~55 ksi or 380 MPa), hardness (Brinell ~107), and excellent bearing properties, making it ideal for durable, high-precision parts. It machines faster than cast iron and is a cost-effective alternative to bronze or aluminum.
c.Applications: Suitable for complex, high-strength components like bearings, bushings, gears, and automotive or mechanical parts. It can be plated or finished for enhanced aesthetics and corrosion resistance.
d.Considerations:Use refractory-lined furnaces to prevent iron contamination from steel crucibles.
ZA-12 is more expensive than Zamak alloys but cheaper than bronze, with better performance than sand-cast or die-cast aluminum in many applications.
It can also be gravity cast (e.g., sand or permanent mold casting) for lower-volume production.
2.Given Shenzhen Alu Rapid Prototype Precision Co., Ltd.’s expertise in die casting, CNC machining, and advanced manufacturing, we are likely equipped to handle ZA-12 die casting, particularly with cold chamber processes used for aluminum and similar alloys. Our capabilities suggest we can produce precision ZA-12 parts, including post-processing like threading with a die, as ZA-12 is highly machinable. For threading, use HSS dies with cutting oil, following the same steps as for cast aluminum (chamfer rod, turn die slowly, reverse to clear chips).
