Injection molding is a widely used manufacturing process for producing high-precision parts in large volumes by injecting molten material—most commonly thermoplastic polymers, but also metals, ceramics, or glass—into a precisely engineered mold cavity. 

The resulting parts can range from small components like bottle caps to complex items like automotive dashboards or medical devices.

How Does Injection Molding Work?

Advantages and Applications

Advantages: It offers excellent repeatability, minimal waste (via recycling of excess material), and the ability to produce intricate geometries with tight tolerances (±0.1 mm or better). It's cost-effective for runs exceeding 10,000 units but has high upfront tooling costs (molds can cost $10,000–$100,000+).

Applications: Common in consumer goods (e.g., toys, electronics housings), automotive parts, medical equipment, and packaging. It's versatile for materials like ABS, nylon, or polycarbonate.

While primarily associated with plastics, variations like metal injection molding (MIM) adapt the process for denser materials.
