  • What is 2k injection molding?

2K injection molding, also known as two-shot, dual-shot, or multi-shot molding, is a specialized manufacturing process in plastic injection molding that allows for the production of complex parts using two different materials (such as thermoplastics with varying properties like hardness or color) or colors in a single molding cycle and within the same mold.

How It Works

1.The process typically involves a rotary or index mold system:The first material (often the base or substrate) is injected into the mold cavity.

2.The mold then rotates or indexes to a second station, where the second material is injected over, around, or into the first material while it's still partially molten, ensuring strong chemical or mechanical bonding.

3.The part is ejected as a finished, multi-material component—no secondary assembly required.

Key Advantages

Efficiency: Reduces production time and labor by combining steps into one cycle.

Design Flexibility: Enables multi-color aesthetics, soft-touch grips on rigid bases, or parts with varying durometers (e.g., a toothbrush handle with a flexible grip).

Cost Savings: Minimizes waste and assembly costs compared to post-molding bonding or overmolding in separate tools.

Precision: Ideal for tight tolerances in industries like automotive, medical devices, consumer electronics, and toys.
