- How to clean die cast zinc?
Here's a safe and effective way to clean die-cast zinc (commonly used in model cars, Zamak figurines, toys, hardware, etc.) without damaging the finish or causing "zinc pest" to accelerate.
General Rules for Die-Cast Zinc
a.Zinc alloys hate strong alkalis (e.g., oven cleaner, lye), strong acids, and chlorine bleach → these cause corrosion or zinc pest.
b.Avoid prolonged soaking in water if the item is old (can promote rot from the inside).
c.Never put die-cast zinc in a tumbler/vibratory bowl with aggressive media.
Safe Cleaning Methods (from mildest to strongest)

Products Known to Be Safe on Die-Cast Zinc
a.Mild dish soap (Dawn, Fairy)
b.Isopropyl alcohol
c.Autosol Metal Polish
d.Peek Multi-Surface Polish
e.Renaissance Wax or any good carnauba wax (protects after cleaning)
f.Flitz Metal Polish (very mild)
d.Cape Cod Polishing Cloths (gentle on painted models too)
What to Absolutely Avoid
a.Vinegar, citric acid, lemon juice
b.Coca-Cola or ketchup “hacks”
c.Baking-soda + vinegar pastes
d.Oven cleaner or lye-based degreasers
e.CLR, Lime-Away, or any calcium/rust removers
f.Ultrasonic cleaner with strong solutions (plain water + a drop of soap is OK for a few minutes only)
